PITTSBURGH — Some tiny trick-or-treaters got suited up for Halloween on Wednesday.
Riley Smolsky, a registered nurse in the UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, crafted costumes for all 80 babies in their NICU.
Costumes included Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, a pumpkin spice latte, painter Bob Ross, peas in a pod, peanut butter and jelly and Heinz ketchup and mustard.
The outfits were made to fit different-sized babies, and even accommodate twins.
“I wanted them to fit right, give the families a great photo op for Halloween,” said Smolsky, who’s worked at the NICU for nearly six years. “So, yeah, a little bit to think about, but mostly just wanted to make everybody smile.”
Friends, family and the Duquesne Women’s Club Soccer Team helped Smolsky put the adorable costumes together so families can still celebrate spooky season while in the hospital.
Baby Owen became a hot dog for his first Halloween, and moms Sara and Zoe Kreinberg were delighted.
“We’re so thankful for the team here to help us celebrate this. Obviously, we want to be able to make it special for him, for us, and they were able to do that for us, which is great,” Sara Kreinberg said.
