Two data center developers told a natural gas industry group that transparency, empathy and deep pockets are key to winning over hearts and minds in the new climate for data centers.
One theme running through Shale Insight, the Marcellus Shale Coalition’s annual conference held this week in Erie, had to do with data centers. Three separate panels had a data center focus, whether it was approaches to development, the need for community engagement and transparency, or siting and risk management. The throughline through each was the natural gas industry that will be powering a lot of the data centers in western Pennsylvania, including high-profile projects in Homer City and Shippingport.
Brian Regli, leader of the Dynamo DC data center project in Springdale, said the data center industry needs to focus more on obtaining what the gas industry would call the social license to operate: Getting the community’s approval for the project and, especially, why the data center is important to their lives.
