Developers reportedly want to put rehab clinic near elementary school in Ligonier

LIGONIER, Pa. — An empty building is causing a lot of controversy in Ligonier.  Developers want to put a rehab clinic there.

Parents are upset, saying it would be next to an elementary school.

A post on Ligonier Valley School District's website Thursday indicated there is a potential buyer interested in the vacant Laurel Valley Middle School.

That buyer, a corporation identified by the district as Coal Capital Holdings, appears to have reached a preliminary agreement to acquire the building and acres around it for $1.75 million.

According to the district, the corporation could lease the property to a for-profit addiction treatment company, Retreat.

Some parents are concerned.

"The concern is not the business. Obviously everything has its place.  My concern is having an alcohol and drug rehab center within yards of an elementary school," said parent George Huss.

Channel 11's Joe Holden has calls into school officials and leaders with the corporation and Retreat.

A meeting about the reported plans is scheduled for Dec. 15.
