EDINBORO, Pa. — Channel 11 News has confirmed that an arrest has been made in connection with a deadly shooting that prompted a lockdown at an area university.
Officials said Tobiah Johnson, an Edinboro University student from Greenville, died in the shooting Monday night at an off-campus apartment building on Water Street.
Channel 11's Amy Marcinkiewicz reported the suspect, Edinboro University senior Trey Gunter, is from the Hill District. Police said Gunter is charged with criminal homicide.
"Two lives are lost. They came to this institution to make something of themselves and to better themselves. Now, look what happened. That's not what we want," said Edinboro police Officer Al Donahue.
Police ordered the precautionary measure Monday night while searching for the suspect.
Police ordered the lockdown around 7:45 p.m. It remained in effect for about four hours.
"I was a little scared," said one student.
Students were told to stay inside and wait for a police escort before walking home from classroom buildings and the campus athletics facility.
"My mom called me right away to talk about safety. I think I'll stay here, though. It's pretty safe," another student said.
About 2,000 students live on the Edinboro campus, about 20 miles south of Erie and 110 miles north of Pittsburgh.
The university was hosting a basketball game when the lockdown was ordered.
Gunter has been suspended from school. He was set to graduate in May with a communications degree.
A family member of Gunter told Channel 11's Courtney Brennan they're working to clear his name.
