PITTSBURGH — A fire forced dozens of people from their apartments into the cold late Sunday night in downtown Pittsburgh.
Firefighters responded to the Roosevelt Arms high-rise apartment building at 6th Street and Penn Avenue in the Cultural District around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night.
Pittsburgh Public Safety confirmed the fire started when a resident smoking a cigarette caught their mattress on fire.
According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, firefighters went floor by floor in the 14-story building to help residents get out.
Not every resident had to leave, though emergency crews brought in Port Authority buses so the evacuated residents wouldn’t have to wait outside as temperatures fell into the low teens.
Firefighters contained the fire to a single apartment on the 10th floor, Pittsburgh Public Safety said.
No one was hurt.
A Public Safety spokesperson said all but six residents were allowed to return to their homes by morning. One of those residents couldn’t return because of damage, while the other five are elderly or have mobility issues.
The Red Cross took the displaced residents to a hotel for the night.
