3 injured in fire, explosion at West Virginia gas well

SYCAMORE, W.Va. (AP) — Authorities say three people were injured in a gas well fire and explosion in Harrison County. The flames are out, and there’s no danger to the public.

Sgt. Heather Mick of the Harrison County 911 Center said two victims were airlifted to an area hospital after the blast around 4 a.m. Friday in the Sycamore area. They are both in stable condition.

A third person was transported by ambulance to a hospital, and they are OK.

Officials said Hall Drilling LLC was drilling a natural gas well when an unknown source of natural gas escaped out of the hole, which ignited.

Mick said the fire triggered then triggered an explosion. The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes.

The well was in a rural area and not near any homes.

Representatives from Hall Drilling LLC released the following statement Friday about the incident: “We value the safety and protection of our employees and are making every effort to address the needs of the injured parties and their families. Hall Drilling LLC would also like to thank the Reynoldsville and Nutter Fork Fire Departments and the local EMS Squads for their prompt response.”
