Mustafa Mousab Alowemer, who plotted to blow up the Legacy International Worship Center on Wilson Avenue on the North Side, was ordered by U.S. District Judge Marilyn Horan to serve 17 years and four months in prison.
Alowemer, 24, was a student at Brashear High School when he plotted to bomb the church in the name of ISIS.
Alowemer, who lived in Northview Heights, pleaded guilty in September 2021 to one count of attempting to provide material support and resources to a foreign organization.
The government said that in 2019, Alowemer met a person online who he thought supported ISIS. That person was actually a covert operator for the FBI.
Alowemer professed his desire to participate in jihad and recorded himself pledging allegiance to ISIS. He met with an undercover FBI employee and made plans to bomb the church.
