Former head of DOE energy lab found dead in Upper St. Clair

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The former head of the National Energy Technology Laboratory has been found dead.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said 54-year-old Anthony Cugini was found Wednesday morning at about 8:30 a.m. at the Wingfield Pines Conservation Area.

A determination of the cause of death is still pending, but police said it may have been an accident.

In November a Pittsburgh grand jury indicted Cugini on obstruction of justice charges.

Cugini became NETL's director in 2010, and resigned on Oct. 11. No reason was given for the resignation.

The technology lab works to produce affordable energy and enhance energy security. The lab has research offices in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, Oregon and Alaska.
