A judge sentenced Megan Batykefer, 32, to up to 23 months in jail and three years of probation.
Batykefer, who coached the North Allegheny High School boys rowing team, was found guilty of institutional sexual assault in August.
Batykefer’s attorney argues that his client’s relationship with the student was consensual, and the student was 18 when the two had sex.
“She just cannot do this and not expect to go to jail,” Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Jusge Edward Borkowski said.
Her attorney argued that his client wasn’t aware that the law protects students from sexual contact with a teacher regardless of age.
The attorney said the victim in this case did not want to see Batykefer get jail time.
Her father spoke in court during Tuesday’s sentencing, telling the judge the last year has been tough on his family.
