Fundraiser for toddler born without ears

PITTSBURGH — A family is looking to raise money for a little girl born without ears.

Little Gabbi is dealing with a rare condition in which she was born without an outer ear or holes in her ears.

She has the inner ear, but due to her condition, she is moderately to profoundly deaf, said Gabbi’s mother, Michelle Giovengo.

An implant allows Gabbi to hear, but Michelle and her husband, Michael Giovengo, want a more normal life for their daughter. In order to provide their daughter with a new sense of normalcy, the Giovengos are preparing for Gabbi to undergo a costly surgery.

After an insurance battle, the surgery was approved, but the family has to cover the insurance copays and 30 percent.

Gabbi’s parents are now asking for help in raising money to cover the cost of the expensive operation.

The launch of a website and Facebook page, through which the Giovengos have seen an outpouring of support from people in several states, has helped the family raise half of the money needed.

In order to continue towards their $20,000 goal, a fundraiser is being held Monday night at La Cappella.

In order to find out more about the fundraiser and other ways to donate, you can check out the Ears for Gabbi Facebook page or website.
