PITTSBURGH — Since expanding its partnership with digital marketplace Flashfood to all 167 of its store locations in late 2022, Giant Eagle Inc. has hit a major milestone in its sustainability efforts.
Through the partnership with the Toronto, Canada-based app, over 1 million pounds of food has been diverted from landfills.
The Flashfood platform works by allowing the grocery chain to sell food that is nearing its best-by date at a reduced cost — up to 50% off — to consumers. Shoppers browse these offerings on the Flashfood app, make their purchases and then pick them up in a designated Flashfood area in-store. To date, Giant Eagle shoppers have saved nearly $2.5 million.
