Girl shot in Mercer County, flown to Pittsburgh hospital

LACKAWANNOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A young girl was flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital after she was shot in the lower torso Saturday in Lackawannock Township, Mercer County, officials said.

State police said Saturday night that the girl, 9, was shot accidentally by a 12-gauge shotgun after the firearm was left loaded and unattended.

According to police, two children under the age of 5 were playing in the area when one of the children picked up the gun and fired it.

Channel 11 News has learned that the shooting happened at an Amish farm in the area of Bend Road.

State police said Saturday night that responders were called to the scene about 5 p.m.

Police said the incident is under investigation.
