Hillside slide threatens home in Westmoreland Co.

EAST VANDERGRIFT, Pa. — A massive hillside slid about 50 feet in East Vandergrift, threatening a home and leaving neighbors asking questions.

Channel 11’s Jennifer Tomazic reported that recent rain loosened a tree which eventually uprooted along the High Street walking path. The slide pushed a neighbor’s shed toward Dan and Tammy Waner’s McKinley Avenue home.

“I looked and saw the whole hillside came down. I was totally shocked and I said, ‘I don’t know what to do,’” Dan Waner said. “We’re pretty lucky we didn’t have any damage except for some cleanup.”

Westmoreland Department of Public Safety engineers were called to the scene to inspect the situation and determine a course of action. The entire house was taped off.

“The main thing is to keep people from the area. It’s still moving slightly. It’s endangering the one home. No one is living there, but every precaution is being taken to make sure everyone is safe,” Dan Stevens said.

No injuries were reported.
