An Indian street food restaurant in Pittsburgh’s North Oakland neighborhood was ordered closed after inspectors found over a dozen violations on Tuesday.
An Allegheny County Health Department inspection report for Chaai & Chaatwala notes 18 violations, two of which are considered high risk for causing foodborne illness.
The high risks include several foods that were too warm in a prep cooler and being unable to clean and sanitize dishes because of a sink not being able to drain.
Some of the lower-risk violations flagged include the prep cooler not being able to stay below 41 degrees, sewage pooling in the unused basement, rodent droppings on a shelf and a counter, soiled surfaces and issues with food storage.
The restaurant was also operating without a valid health permit.
Chaai & Chaatwala is closed until further notice. To reopen, several corrections must be completed, like fixing the prep cooler, removing the backup at the sink, cleaning the sewage and fixing the underlying issue resulting in the backup, and removing fryers from the facility.
