It’s official: Excela Health, Butler Health System to merge

The boards of Excela Health and Butler Health System announced Friday a definitive agreement to merge the two in a transaction that could be completed as soon as the end of the year.

Excela and Butler are two community health and hospital systems with big footprints around the north and west of Pittsburgh. They include Excela Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg, Excela Latrobe Hospital, Excela Frick Hospital, Butler Memorial Hospital and Clarion Hospital. Terms of the agreement weren’t immediately disclosed. A letter of intent was announced June 1 and the two organizations have been negotiating and hammering out an agreement since then.

Also yet to be announced are the management of the combined health system or the name.
