Judge holds charges against teen in Cupples Stadium shooting

PITTSBURGH — A judge has held all charges against a 15-year-old boy accused of shooting three people outside Cupples Stadium earlier this month, sending the case to trial.

During a preliminary hearing, defense attorney Casey White argued detectives wrongly pinned the shooting on his client, Charles Lawshe, and that surveillance video does not clearly identify the shooter.

“If you watch the video, there are a lot of individuals that match that description down on the South Side that night after the football game,” White said.

White argued that multiple people in the area were wearing sweatshirts and carrying backpacks, making it difficult to identify the person who fired the shots.

During the hearing, school employees identified Lawshe in surveillance video that police say showed him walking along East Carson Street the night of the shooting.

Another video, which was blurry and grainy, showed a large fight breaking out in the middle of the street and a person dressed in black firing a gun.

Three people were shot in the incident. All three survived.

White argued that the video does not clearly establish who was involved in the fight or who fired the shots.

Testimony also revealed that detectives initially detained another person who matched the shooter’s description near Carson Street. That person was later released after police determined they were not the shooter.

Lawshe was subsequently arrested in connection with the shooting.

White asked the judge to reduce the attempted homicide charges to assault charges, but the judge declined.

Lawshe will remain in the Allegheny County Jail as the case proceeds to trial.
