15-year-old charged with shooting outside of Cupples Stadium after high school football game

PITTSBURGH — A 15-year-old boy is facing charges following a shooting outside Cupples Stadium on Pittsburgh’s South Side nearly two weeks ago.

Three teenagers were injured in the gunfire after a high school football game.

The shooting occurred after a fight broke out on East Carson Street, where a large crowd of juveniles had gathered on the sidewalk and in the street. All three victims were taken to the hospital and are recovering.

Right after the shots were fired, one of the officers already on scene began chasing the suspect, later identified as Charles Lawshe, on foot, before losing sight of him, according to a criminal complaint.

Detectives were able to obtain surveillance footage from about 20 minutes before the shooting showing Lawshe in the area with three other individuals, according to the complaint.

Police said the victims did not know who the three others were, but said they knew Lawshe through their jobs.

Lawshe is charged with three counts of criminal attempted homicide, three counts of aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license and possession of a firearm by a minor. He is currently not in custody, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Following the incident, Pittsburgh Public Schools implemented updated security measures at Cupples Stadium that took effect last week. Under the new regulations, all students under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old.

The district now requires all Pittsburgh Public Schools students and students from visiting school districts to present valid school identification to enter the stadium. Additionally, anyone currently suspended from school or athletic events is barred from attending events at the venue.

Stadium entry rules were also adjusted to close the gates earlier, at the beginning of the third quarter. Outside food and beverages are no longer permitted inside the stadium.

A clear bag policy will take effect at Cupples Stadium this Thursday, banning bookbags and backpacks.
