Ride-sharing services can pick up Pittsburgh airport riders

PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County Airport Authority officials have approved a policy that lets ride-sharing companies pick up passengers at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Until now, companies like Uber, Lyft and Yellow Z have been allowed to take passengers to the airport about 10 miles west of the city, but not pick them up.

But County Executive Rich Fitzgerald announced the new policy Tuesday and says Uber, based in San Francisco, has received the first permit.

“We’re very excited about the potential new business that this policy opens up in our region,” said Fitzgerald.

The permit for ride-sharing services to pick up passengers at the airport is $12,000, plus a $14,000 security deposit and a fee of $2.90 per passenger.

Uber riders will pay that company's standard fares, plus the $2.90 fee, to get rides from the airport.

“We’ve heard from countless riders and drivers that they would like the option of using Uber at the airport,” said Uber Pittsburgh GM Jennifer Krusius.

Channel 11 News has learned Uber is already on board and licensed drivers are allowed to start picking up at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Shigeto Ono told Channel 11’s Brandon Hudson that he would use Uber to get to Carnegie Mellon University’s campus from Pittsburgh International.

“If I need to go back really fast, then I’ll definitely use that service,” he said. “I think it’s nice because it’s another option from buses and taxis.”

Lyft and Yellow Z have been provided the permit information, but have yet to apply.

A spokesperson for Yellow Cab’s parent company said in a statement: “I hope the authority will carefully monitor the actions of Uber, especially their surge charge pricing as it impacts the city’s convention business.”
