SQUIRREL HILL, Pa. — Joe Aiello, the founder of Aiello’s Pizza in Squirrel Hill, died Monday at the age of 71.
Aiello opened his pizza shop in 1978, 11 years after he came to America from Sicily.
His family thanked his customers and friends for their loyalty over the years through the shop’s Facebook page.
Employees told Channel 11 News that even though Aiello is gone, nothing at the shop will change and the dough will still be made by hand every day.
“He’s sentimental to this community and to this city. Everybody knows him and loves his product,” employee Anthony Adragna said. “They’re going to miss him and everyone definitely appreciates everything he’s done.”
