Locker room thefts reported at several local LA Fitness gyms

PITTSBURGH — Police are investigating reports of thefts at several area LA Fitness gym locker rooms.

Authorities said the thefts were reported Tuesday night at LA Fitness locations in Robinson, Monroeville, South Side and Collier Township.

According to police, whoever is responsible for the thefts used bolt cutters to cut the locks that were on lockers. Wallets and cellphones were among the most common stolen items.

“Man, that’s awful. I can’t believe that would happen,” LA Fitness member Tim Bonner said.

Robinson Township police Chief Dale Vietmeier said the thefts at the Robinson location happened between 8 and 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

“It’s frustrating they would go to a fitness center and have a lock on their locker, then find it cut off or broken and they’re stuff is taken,” Vietmeier said.

Gym members told Channel 11’s Jodine Costanzo that they’re disappointed about the thefts and they’d like the company to do something to improve security.

“It’s the top club in the area and people choose to work out here for a reason,” LA Fitness member Matt Taylor said.

So far, no arrests have been made and police haven’t released any information about possible suspects.
