Man arrested following swim across Youghiogheny R. to escape police

WEST NEWTON, Pa. — A man is in police custody after fleeing from police Tuesday morning.

Authorities said the man used a number of methods to avoid police after an officer approached him at a Sunoco gas station to question him about an attempted theft about 11:30 a.m.

During his lengthy attempt to elude police, the man swam across the Youghiogheny River, stole a man’s bicycle and climbed up a tree, police said.

Officers apprehended the man around 4:30 p.m. with the use of a stun gun.

Alan Gough, whose bike was stolen, said, “When the cop came, he got nervous and asked if he could borrow my bike and just started riding down towards West Newton as fast as he could, then just dumped it when the cop caught up with him.”
