Man buys radar gun to track speeders on Hazelwood street

PITTSBURGH — A man who lives in Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood wants drivers to slow down on a stretch of road where he says drivers ignore the 25 mph speed limit.

John Jugila said he’s fed up with the speeding on Second Avenue, so he bought a radar gun to see how fast drivers are traveling.

Channel 11 was with Jugila Friday as he clocked cars going nearly 60 mph.

“I've called the Mayor's Office three times about speeding out here. No one's showed up to do anything about it,” he said.

Jugila said he’s seen at least two accidents in front of his home this year, and he just wants to feel safe in his neighborhood.

Channel 11 took his concerns to city councilman Corey O’Connor who said his office mostly gets calls for speeding in school zones.

"We really want to slow that down because of the development and new residents that we want to bring to Hazelwood,” he said.

O’Connor said Pittsburgh police have done speed traps in the area but the officers aren’t allowed to use radar guns.

"We're not allowed to use radar guns as the gentleman in the video showed. It actually hurts a lot of that enforcement,” he said.

Pennsylvania is the only state that does not allow local police to use radar guns. It’s an ordinance that state lawmakers are trying to overturn.

In the meantime, O’Connor asks homeowners to be vigilant.

"When we try to slow people down on Second Avenue, what often occurs is they use side streets. So now they're in our neighborhoods going just as fast,” he said.

O’Connor said the people in his district are welcome to bring up the issue in future neighborhood safety meetings.
