Midland residents say several abandoned homes causing various problems

MIDLAND, Pa. — Several Beaver County residents are doing everything in their power to have several abandoned homes torn down.

Catherine Hill, who lives on Pine Street in Midland, said there are at least nine abandoned homes in a one-block stretch.

“We are fed up. This isn’t right,” Hill said.

Diana Washington told Channel 11’s Amy Marcinkiewicz that she’s directly affected by the abandoned homes. She believes a home that’s falling down next to hers is ruining her house.

Water comes into my kitchen from that house. I have mold on the floor,” Washington said.

Tim Smith, who has lived in Midland for 40 years, said rodents from an abandoned home often come into his house.

“We sometimes have rodents come into our house from there,” Smith said.

The council president told Marcinkiewicz that the borough has no money to demolish the buildings. He said it relies on a demolition blight program, and that program doesn’t have the funds.

“Something needs to be done,” Washington said.

More than a dozen concerned and upset citizens said they plan to attend a Thursday night borough meeting.
