PITTSBURGH — According to a criminal complaint, Lee Chavez was speeding along Fifth Avenue in Shadyside on the evening of August 23, 2021. When police attempted to pull him over, he accelerated, jumped the curb, and hit three pedestrians near the intersection of St. James Street and 5th Avenue.
After seven long months, criminal charges were finally filed against Lee Chavez. The motorcyclist is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault by vehicle, fleeing police, and driving with a suspended license.
Residents in Shadyside said this accident is unfortunately just one of many because drivers go way too fast along the busy street.
“I would not like to be hit waiting at the bus stop,” said Alex Hummels, a Shadyside resident.
Other nearby residents said they would like to see motorists respect the people that live in the area by going the speed limit (35 mph).
“35 mph is fine, but I think people go 50 or sometimes more,” said another resident, Chris.
Chris moved to the area just more than a year ago, said she sees it all the time, “They go very fast,” said Chris.
Ironically, she had moved to the area because she wanted to live in a walkable community.
“I walk to the grocery store too,” Chris explained.
But said just hearing about this accident that left a woman in critical condition for two weeks, makes her second-guess some of her daily walks.
“There should be some more restraints for people driving and more signs posted indicating how fast they are going. Whether that will help, I don’t know,” said Chris.
