Mt. Washington woman loses part of hand in fireworks accident

PITTSBURGH — A Mount Washington woman lost part of her hand Thursday night when officials said she accidentally lit an explosive.

Emergency officials said the woman thought she was lighting a candle when the accident happened.

The incident happened on Eureka Street about 9 p.m.

Neighbors said the woman was in the back yard of the house with her daughter when she mistakenly lit the firework. The woman also suffered burns to her face in the accident.

“I thought it was an M-16 or a gun,” said neighbor Jim Thompson. “It was deafening."

The woman was rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital. Her condition hasn’t been released.

Police are investigating.
