Neighbors concerned with crumbling roof on house in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood

PITTSBURGH — Frustration is building over a property in the Knoxville neighborhood. Over the last few years, pieces have fallen from the home with the latest being a part of the roof collapsing on to the neighbor’s house next door.

“I heard like a big boom and I was like with my son what was that,” said Hope Duku who lives nearby.

In the middle of the night, wood splintered and part of the roof of 226 Rochelle Street came tumbling down.

“When you look at the window you just see the top of that roof on top of my roof that’s it. The other window you can’t open the window because all you see is this and I got scared and nervous and something needs to be done with these houses I’m right in the middle of a field and an abandon house,” Duku said.

Duku lives next door. That roof is now blocking her second story windows. She’s frustrated by the property as more and more pieces fall year after year.

“I call 311 and 911 and nobody is doing nothing so something needs to be done,” Duku said.

Not long before the roof, it was the front porch with that comes bricks and more debris. This time the city did come out and post a condemned sign on the front door.

While the home appears abandoned and Duku said she hasn’t seen anyone in years, it is privately owned. We did reach out to the city to find out its next steps but haven’t heard back.

Now Duku is fearful of what could happen next if the property isn’t cleaned up.

“I just don’t want anything to happen this is my home it is what it is but I am just trying to do the best I can with what I have,” Duku said.
