New state law requires old TVs, computers to be recycled

PITTSBURGH — As summer students move out and fall students move in, a new law is impacting what they can and can’t throw out.

Pittsburgh Public Works crews were busy Tuesday hauling garbage and old furniture from the sidewalks of Oakland. However, televisions were left untouched.

“I guess (it started) around March and April when students started to leave. When they leave, they just drop the TV,” Oakland resident Steve Pellegrino said. “I’ve seen TVs that get dumped in front of other people’s properties. I live down the street, and there’s a TV that’s been sitting there for two weeks that someone dumped.”

A state law that went into effect earlier this year says televisions must be recycled.

Some big-box retailers will take your old analog TVs if you buy a new flat-screen TV.

All other computers, televisions and cellphones should be taken to a recycling center.
