Nuclear plant shuts down reactor for maintenance

SHIPPINGPORT, Pa. — A nuclear power plant in Beaver County has shut down one of its two reactors for maintenance and refueling, a process that occurs every 18 months.

FirstEnergy Corp. won't say how long Monday's shutdown at the Beaver Valley Power Station in Shippingport will last, due to competitive reasons.

But spokeswoman Jennifer Young says inspectors will perform preventative maintenance and 65 of the reactor's 157 fuel assemblies will be replaced.

Young says the Unit 1 reactor produces 911 megawatts, or enough to power nearly 640,000 homes.

A second, 940-megawatt reactor at the same plant is continuing to operate at 100 percent capacity.
