ONLY ON 11: New cellphone video shows weekend fight at Kennywood

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — New cellphone video uncovered by Channel 11 News and shared with West Mifflin police Tuesday shows the fight at Kennywood over the weekend that forced the amusement park to close early and has prompted stricter security measures.

Channel 11 News uncovered the new footage on social media in which a young girl is attacked before an officer arrives to break up the fight.

When the video was shared with police, West Mifflin officers said they had not seen the video yet and would have detectives take a closer look.

Police, Kennywood officials and a representative from the Department of Homeland Security all met Monday to discuss some major security changes at the park as a result of the fight.

Following their meeting, it was announced that the amusement park will add more security guards and is also considering implementing a chaperone requirement for children. Kennywood had a similar policy in place in the 1990s.

The fight Saturday reportedly started in Kiddie Land and continued at a McDonald’s across the street when the 50 to 75 people involved were removed from the park.

"That's just sad. It's a family park. There's no reason for it,” said parent Marita Jones.

Jones told Channel 11 News that she plans to take her daughter to Kennywood next month and supports the efforts to tighten security.

"To think that it could happen when (my children are) there, it's scary,” she said.
