PennDOT considers adjusting Route 844 detour after drivers complain of confusion

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. — Washington County residents living along a posted detour for Route 844 said a lack of signage is making an already confusing detour even worse.

Richard Shriver is one of many who live right along the detour, which has been in place since Aug. 3 and has drivers using Jefferson Avenue, Route 231, Route 50 and Route 18 to get between Avella and Washington.

Drivers have complained that the detour signs are too far apart and too confusing to follow.

"The biggest problem is that they've got the signs up, but they don't have the detour properly marked,” Shriver said.

A neighbor told Channel 11's news partners at TribLIVE that he's made personalized detour maps for his friends who keep getting lost.

"People will still come down here, and they'll go right through the ‘road closed’ sign, and then they'll have to end up turning around in someone's driveway. Big trucks - when they do it - they have to back up all the way through here, which causes a hazardous situation at this intersection,” Shriver said.

PennDOT officials said they sent a crew to the area on Thursday to review the signage.

The detour is scheduled to end on Sept. 30 when the main route reopens.
