Pirates reveal plans to honor ‘The Great One’ on Roberto Clemente Day

The Pirates, and all of Major League Baseball are getting ready to celebrate the life and legacy of Bucs legend Roberto Clemente.

Sept. 15 is recognized as Roberto Clemente Day. Pirates players, coaches, executives and front office staff will take part in a day of service to honor Clemente’s humanitarian impact. The Clemente family, US Steel and Sheetz employees are also participating.

This year, the team is sponsoring five community events in and around the greater Pittsburgh area, including baseball/softball field renovations, a drive-through food distribution, and visits to two local elementary schools.

The day continues at PNC Park, when the Pirates play the Brewers at 6:40 p.m.

The celebration starts as soon as the gates open, with the first 21,000 fans receiving a Roberto Clemente bobblehead.

Festivities continue with on-field pregame ceremonies, where the Pirates honor their MLB Clemente Award nominee, Brandon Lowe, and the winners of the organization’s PCCP awards.

In a nod to Clemente’s heritage, the Pirates, SportsNet Pittsburgh (SNP), and Major League Baseball will air a live, Spanish-language Pirates broadcast. “El día de Roberto Clemente: Los Piratas en español” will be available on SNP+ and the SNP 360 app, as Roberto Clemente Jr. and three-time MLB All-Star Carlos Baerga will be in the booth calling the action and welcoming special guests such as Martin Maldonado and Albert Pujols.
