AVALON, Pa. — A man is facing felony charges after police say he ran over an Avalon police officer’s foot during a confrontation outside Avalon Elementary School amid afternoon pickup.
Channel 11 learned that the man charged, Trevaughn Brown, also worked for the Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS.
“Brown has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of his hearing. Following that, EMS will also conduct its own internal investigation,” a Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson said.
According to the criminal complaint, an officer outside Avalon Elementary School saw a vehicle parked in a clearly marked no-parking zone on Sept. 23. The officer asked the driver, identified as Trevaughn Brown, to move the vehicle because officers had received complaints about illegal parking near the school.
Avalon Police Chief Tom Kokoski told Channel 11 that what happened next escalated a routine parking issue into a criminal case.
“It was pretty bad, you know, just for a simple ask of, ‘Hey, can you move your car?’” Kokoski said.
According to the complaint, Brown accused the officer of being “on a power trip,” commenting in front of staff and students.
Police allege that, as the officer began writing the parking ticket, Brown returned to his vehicle and loudly stated, “Throw it away. I’ll see you in court.”
Brown reportedly then drove away and ran over the officer’s right foot.
“If you assault one of my officers, you’re likely to get arrested for it,” Kokoski said.
Police said officers later contacted Brown, who brought himself to the Avalon Police Department and was taken to Allegheny County Jail.
Parents at the school said pickup and dismissal can already be challenging.
“Parking at pickup time is pretty crazy,” said parent Taryn McNabb, said the incident adds to safety concerns around the school.
As for the incident, McNabb said it makes what can already be a stressful environment even more stressful.
“I’m not really surprised, but it makes me more nervous. I don’t want to send the kids by themselves,” McNabb said.
Online court records show Brown is scheduled for formal arraignment on Dec. 3 in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.
