Pittsburgh proclaims ‘Roberto Clemente Day’ on 50th anniversary of 3,000th hit

PITTSBURGH — On the 50th anniversary of his 3,000th major hit, Roberto Clemente will be honored as Friday is proclaimed “Roberto Clemente Day” in Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh.

City and county officials. including Mayor Ed Gainey, will come together to celebrate Clemente’s life at a 2:30 p.m. event. in Gold Lot 1A at Acrisure Stadium on West General Robinson Street.

The event will include the unveiling of the Three Rivers Stadium home plate marker and the playing of the 3,000th hit call by Bob Prince.

Clemente was a standout baseball player, veteran and humanitarian. Major League Baseball celebrated its 21st annual Roberto Clemente Day on Thursday with festivities in New York.

Clemente was the first Latino player to have 3,000 Major League hits. It happened at Three Rivers Stadium, and it happened to be his last. He died in a plane crash three months later.
