Pittsburgh spending $100K on studying nightlife

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The city of Pittsburgh is paying a California firm $100,000 to study its nightlife, in hopes of providing a better experience and reducing problems including public urination in areas with high concentrations of bars.

City Councilman Bruce Kraus has pushed for solutions on the city's South Side, which he represents. The working-class area has been developed with restaurants and nightclubs, and Kraus has often snapped pictures to document littering and public drunkenness there.

Kraus said when it comes to nightlife "the experience is the commodity, not the drink price."

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said the study by the Santa Cruz-based Responsible Hospitality Institute will take about nine months. It will focus on the South Side, downtown and the city's Lawrenceville section, which also has a relatively high concentration of bars.
