The superintendent of the Bethlehem-Center School District in Washington County is accused of driving while intoxicated, according to court documents.
Linda Marcolini told Channel 11 News via email that nothing is finalized yet, but online court documents show she’s facing DUI and other charges following an accident last month in South Fayette Township.
South Fayette Police said Marcolini’s alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when she crashed her car into oncoming traffic on Dec. 12 at the corner of Oakridge and Dutch Hill roads.
According to the criminal complaint, a responding officer said Marcolini was chewing on mint gum and was confused by basic questions.
The officer said Marcolini fumbled through paperwork and was unable to find the necessary information.
According to the criminal complaint, Marcolini reportedly told doctors at the hospital that she was coming back from a late meeting at work, she had two glasses of wine and was attempting to make a phone call when the crash occurred.
"Once everything occurs, I will make sure everyone will know the ins and outs," Marcolini said in the email.
Marcolini was hired in Dec. 2013.
The president of the school board told Channel 11's Cara Sapida that they will be discussing the charges at their upcoming executive session on Monday. Other than that, they aren't allowed to talk about employment status.
Bethlehem-Center parents and community members said they’re surprised by the charges.
“What if she had killed somebody? I feel she should have the same punishment as everybody else,” said Laura Hartley.
“If you’re in the public eye, especially around children, I think you need to set a better example than that,” Lynn Bussey said.
While many agree it wasn’t a good example, they also believe in second chances.
“I don’t think it sets a good example, obviously,” Joshua McColum said. “But sometimes someone makes a mistake. I don’t know if it’s worth slamming them for their first offense. In my opinion, I’d have to look at her record.”
