MONROEVILLE, Pa. — Police said a man is facing charges Thursday after stealing hundreds of dollars from two stores at the Monroeville Mall and attempting to hit a third business.
Demetryaiss Holyfield, 21, attempted to hide his face from cameras as he was led off to jail Thursday evening.
At first, Holyfield did not want to comment on the charges, but he eventually told Channel 11 he wasn’t sure what happened.
“It’s unusual, that’s for sure,” said Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole.
Cole said at about 11: 30 a.m., police received a call about a robbery in progress at the mall.
According to police, Holyfield went into three stores and demanded money with a threatening note that indicated he had a weapon.
“At the first two stores inside the mall, he got a little over $700 between both the stores,” said Cole.
Police said Holyfield wasn’t done though, attempting to steal from a third store but not getting any cash.
Mall security quickly gathered information on Holyfield, including the license plate number to the silver car he took off in.
Within minutes, officers located Holyfield on nearby Mall Boulevard.
“He was in the vehicle. He was taken into custody by the Monroeville Police Department,” said Cole.
Holyfield is also charged in a Family Dollar store robbery out of Sharpsburg on Tuesday. According to police, he used a note written on an orange sticky note to communicate his demands in each crime.
