FAYETTE COUNTY, Pa. — A young girl who fell into a fish pond in Fayette County and wasn’t breathing is fine tonight thanks to her quick-thinking grandmother.
Kendall Rae Evans' family tonight Channel 11's Cara Sapida that the 18-month-old girl loves going to her grandparents' house. But two weeks ago, the family had the biggest scare of their lives when they found her face down in the pond.
“She’s got crystal blue eyes and her skin was as blue as her eyes. That’s the thing I remember most, how blue her skin was,” said grandmother Trudy Evans.
Evans said the yard was filled with family, when someone noticed Kendall. Evans said she grabbed her granddaughter and started doing CPR.
“I tried to get her mouth open. It was clenched shut and she was blue,” Evans said.
Paul Evans said he dropped to his knees and watched his stepmom bring his baby girl back to life. After three rounds of CPR, she coughed up water.
“I keep seeing her in my mind, floating in the water face down. It’s hard,” Paul Evans Jr. said. “We’re grateful. We owe her everything. If she wouldn’t have been there, I don’t know what would have happened.”
The shallow pond now has a fence around it. But the family wants to warn parents everywhere how easy it is for a child to drown even in the shallowest of waters.
“You can’t take your eyes off them for a second,” Trudy Evans said.
