Residents escape burning apartments in Butler County

HARRISVILLE, Pa. — Several people escaped a fire at an apartment building in Butler County early Thursday.

The flames destroyed the apartments on East Mercer Street in Harrisville at around 2 a.m.

The fire reached three alarms before firefighters were able to get it under control. Investigators said it began in a first floor apartment.

The person who lived there was not home at the time.

Four apartments were destroyed. Five adults and two children escaped. The American Red Cross is assisting them.

"It sounded like there was a bear on the roof and I smelled something funny... I seen smoke coming from the floor," fire victim Brittany Overly said.

She and her two-year-old son ran outside.

"You don't really know what you have until you have nothing,  and I have nothing," Overly said.

The Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal in investigating. Authorities do not believe the fire is suspicious.
