School bus driver found to have over 100 photos and videos of child pornography, police say

State troopers have charged a school bus driver with having child pornography.

Police say Edward Smith is now behind bars at the Westmoreland County Jail on over 100 counts of sexual abuse of children - child sexual abuse material.

“It appears most of this is through video with an exchange with other people who are most likely involved in this disgusting type of behavior,” Trooper Steve Limani said.

Smith was arrested on Monday at his Latrobe home on Laveen Street, which is a few blocks away from an elementary school. According to state police, they found over 100 photos and videos of child pornography with kids ages 3 to 15. They’ve determined none of the victims are local because he was getting the photos and videos through a foreign app.

“So many of the files are coming through this app that, for all intent and purpose, could be coming from overseas or from areas around the country,” Limani said.

Through their investigation, police found Smith also drove school buses part-time for Smith Bus Company. According to the company’s website, they serve schools in Derry, Blairsville, and Homer City. According to Smith Bus Company, he was a “trip only” driver, meaning he didn’t have a regular school route but would drive for field trips or sporting events.

“As a trip-only driver, Smith would not have operated a vehicle without a school district employee on board, such as a coach, teacher and/or chaperone on the bus,” said Keith Mancuso, the administration director for Smith Bus Company.

The bus company’s director of administration says they have no reports of Smith’s behavior while driving their buses, and he no longer works at the company.

“It’s disgusting,” Limani said. “We are talking about a person who is 62 years old, which is unusual. I would have to say that during my 28 years of being a state trooper, that’s not something that starts to happen when you’re 62.”

This investigation started with a tip last September. Police said the arrest took so long because they had to identify the ages of the victims.
