NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Police arrested a man accused of fatally shooting a dog after an armed standoff in New Castle.
According to the New Castle Police Department, officers were called to the 700 block of Chestnut Street around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday for a reported domestic incident.
A woman told police that Raymond Bailey had been brandishing a handgun inside a home. She was leaving the home when she allegedly heard a gunshot and their dog yelp.
Police surrounded the home and tried to speak with Bailey, who they say wouldn’t come out.
The Lawrence County Critical Incident Response Team was called to assist, and neighbors were temporarily evacuated.
Police say Bailey is a convicted felon who’s barred from owning a gun, and he’s known to shoot guns inside and outside the home.
CIRT kept trying to speak with Bailey. Around 10 a.m., they lit off chemical munitions inside the home, and Bailey exited the back door, where he was arrested.
Officers entered the home to make sure it was secure and found the dog, which had apparently been shot to death, police say.
Criminal charges are now pending against Bailey, police say, and the investigation remains ongoing.
