GIBSONIA, Pa. -- The Pine-Richland School District recently removed a religious advertisement from a school publication because it violated a policy regarding separation of church and state.

The ad, paid for by the St. Richard Catholic Church in Gibsonia, was placed in a program for the upcoming student production of the play "Pippin."

The parish said it was only trying to support students from the church who would be appearing in the play, but got rebuffed by school officials who gave the parish two options.

“We were given the unfortunate choice to either remove any reference to God and/or Jesus Christ, or to pull the ad from the playbill and have the costs refunded,” the parish said in a statement. “Running the ad without reference to God and/or Jesus Christ would go against what we believe in as a church.”

Channel 11’s Brandon Hudson contacted Pine-Richland officials, who said they’re trying to “use our best judgment while following school policies.”

One of those is an advertising policy that states the district is barred from accepting any advertisements that promote “a religious or political organization or cause.”

Hudson reached out several times to officials at St. Richard but did not receive a call back Tuesday.
