Sticker shock: Pittsburghers react to record-high gas prices across the area

PITTSBURGH — Experts said we’ve never seen gas prices this high before in Pennsylvania, and it’s only going to get worse.

Drivers told Channel 11 they are shocked to see prices at $5.09 per gallon for regular gas in Pittsburgh.

According to AAA, the price of gas will continue to rise and won’t level off for months.

Jim Garrity with AAA told Channel 11 that the cost of oil is going up because of the war in Ukraine. More people are traveling, and more countries are banning Russian oil.

“In fact, we might not see gas prices go down in our area and throughout the country until September, when we switch back to the winter blend of gasoline,” Garrity said. “It’s a sign that fall is here and also around September, demand drops off.”

Garrity said to ease the pain at the pump, drivers might need to change their habits by driving less or driving slower, and making fewer trips.

Those solutions are things people told Channel 11 that they’re already doing.

“I do all my running around all at once,” said Lena Thomas. “That’s what I’m doing right now. I did all my errands in one swoop today.”

“Usually I didn’t have to ask my friends for gas money, but now I ask for gas money if I take them anywhere because gas is really high,” said Alexa Belschener.
