GREENE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A man is facing a long list of charges after state police said he was involved in a hit-and-run crash, then stole a vehicle at a red light, later crashing it two miles away.
“It happened right in my backyard, that’s scary!” said Janet Miller of Raccoon Township.
“I’ve got goosebumps going up and down my arm just to think of the fact that actually happened here in this intersection,” added Dona Gaudino of Imperial.
That’s how many who live near Hookstown are feeling after hearing about a hit-and-run and carjacking in their neighborhood early Wednesday morning.
State Police said they responded to the intersection of PA-168 and Route 30 just before 4 a.m. Wednesday for a hit-and-run.
Troopers said Jon Cardona Michael of Baden crashed his truck and then walked up to a Jeep stopped at a red light. They said he pulled the driver out of the Jeep and sped off.
He drove about two miles before troopers said he crashed the Jeep at the intersection of Red Dog Road and Little Blue Road.
“For this gentleman to rip out somebody else, just to steal the vehicle, to end up wrecking that vehicle, thank god he didn’t take anybody else’s lives that were on the road that day,” Gaudino said.
After crashing the Jeep, troopers said Michael ran away.
Troopers caught him a short time later.
He went to Allegheny General Hospital for injuries from the second crash.
He’s now facing a long list of charges including robbery of a vehicle and driving on a suspended or revoked license.
“I hope this guy goes to jail,” said Joel Nussbaul of Imperial. “I hope the guy that got ripped out is okay. There’s not much more to say about that. It’s a terrible thing that happened here.”
Channel 11 spoke with the family of the man who was carjacked. They didn’t want to do an interview but said it was a terrifying situation.
People who live in the area said they’re keeping them in their thoughts.
“As a reminder to you, sir, may God look over you today as he did yesterday when this happened,” Gaudino said.
