Trooper testifies elderly man refused to stop before pinning him with car

PITTSBURGH — A preliminary hearing was held on Wednesday for a man police said hit and pinned a state trooper with his car in Washington.

Troopers said 70-year-old Jay Harris was driving erratically and refused to pull over before crashing his car over an embankment.

The trooper testified he banged on Harris' car and told him to stop, but the car reversed and pinned his foot underneath.

"I heard him make an emergency call on his radio, screaming at the top of his lungs for the vehicle to stop running him over," a second officer testified in court.

"I don't believe my client intended to hurt a trooper at all," said defense attorney Keith Owen Campbell.

Harris' charges include fleeing police, resisting arrest and aggravated assault.

"We have an elderly gentleman who was in a very confused state.  No malice whatsoever," said Campbell.

Harris was not in court Wednesday.
