Vehicle crashes into municipal authority worker riding lawnmower in Westmoreland County

DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A man was seriously injured when someone crashed into his lawnmower along a busy local road.

It happened along Route 217 in Derry Township on Tuesday.

“It was gut-wrenching. It was a punch to the stomach. You hate to see your employee get injured like that,” Latrobe Municipal Authority manager Terri Hauser said.

Markings are still visible where the crash left two people unconscious.

Police say Derrick Steininger was cutting the grass for the Latrobe Municipal Authority when he decided to drive onto the road to get to a different part of their property. That’s when police say Teryn Nuttall drove her car off of Route 30 and onto Route 217, eventually crashing into the back of Steininger’s lawn mower. He was thrown from the lawnmower, knocked unconscious, and was later flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in critical condition.

Police say Nuttal was also found unconscious and was not wearing a seatbelt. While Nuttal’s condition is still unknown, the municipal authority says they have been able to get an update about how Steininger is doing.

“We have had communication with his wife. They are running tests on him, and everything is coming back in the right direction. I’ll just say that we are hopeful to have him back real soon. We’re rooting for him and his wife has done a great job of communicating with us,” Hauser said.

State police say the lawnmower did not have the proper marking to be on the road and this crash could have been avoided. The municipal authority now plans to put the lawnmower on a trailer every time they have to move it to different parts of their property to make sure this does not happen again.

Troopers are still working to speak with both drivers to learn more about what led up to the crash.
