MT. PLEASANT — After two years and an extensive investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, the board is hoping the deadly turnpike crash in Mount Pleasant Township in January 2020 will lead to sweeping changes.
NTSB revealed multiple safety factors and recommendations in Tuesday’s hearing.
The board wants Pennsylvania and the Federal Highway Administration to review speed limits and signs for commercial vehicles, especially in bad weather.
They would like to see collision mitigation systems implemented and require video recording systems in heavy vehicles.
The NTSB determined the driver of the motor coach was driving too fast for wet road conditions.
The bus crash caused three tractor trailers and a car to pile up.
The accident killed 5 and hurt 50.Investigators said the bus driver was going 77 mph as he was approaching the curve, causing the bus to hit an embankment and roll on its side.
The motor coach company — Z&D Tour Inc. — is no longer in business after not renewing its insurance in September 2020.
Investigators found the driver was cited five months before the crash for speeding.
