Work to clean up storm damage in Fayette, Westmoreland counties could take weeks

WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. — Work to clean up damage from storms in Westmoreland and Fayette counties could take weeks, as tree services are booked solid.

Channel 11 spoke with a woman who had a dozen trees taken down by Friday’s wind storm.

“We had total devastation in Friday night,” Allison, a resident of Waterford, Westmoreland County, said Monday. “The winds were unbelievable.”

Her home sits along Almond Lane near Ligonier Township.

“The first tree came down around 5:30 p.m. I was cooking dinner and I came outside to see what happened and I noticed the tree beside it was swaying in the wind,” she said, standing in front of her damaged garage. “The ground was bubbling up like a volcano so we knew that one was gonna go too.”

Trees smashed through the roof of her log-cabin style home and crushed the roof of a nearby garage. Despite being in touch with her insurance company, Allison said the real challenge is finding a tree removal service that has a crane that can hoist the decades-old trees safely away from her property.

“We have spoken to someone they have so busy, it’s gonna be a while,” she said.

For now, she’s left waiting for a call back. She tells Channel 11 she is planning a “clean up party” with neighbors this weekend, taking the cleanup process one day at a time.
