What would you think if a methadone clinic was moving into your neighborhood?

ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. — A plan to open a clinic in a Lawrence County neighborhood isn’t sitting well with some residents.

Ellwood City has worked hard on getting drugs out of their community, and now they’re worried about a methadone clinic that may move in.

“We don’t want it in our neighborhood,” said Frank Sbarro.

Sbarro lives on Pershing Street, and recently learned that Ellwood City Council members will decide next week if the drug addiction treatment clinic will open.

“Right next door. I’ve lived here for 30 years. We don’t want this,” Sbarro said.

The Lawrence County Drug and Alcohol Commission contracted with a healthcare service to provide addiction treatment. It cited Ellwood City as an area in need of a clinic.

“I know there are people out there that need this type of help, but in our community, we’ve been working really hard to get rid of drugs. I’m concerned about my community, the kids and older people. This is a real fear,” said Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court.

Some people in the community say they see both sides.

“I have a 2-month-old, but I don’t expect anything really bad to happen,” said Ashley Curnutte.
