Whitehall police investigating student's claim that teacher punched him

WHITEHALL, Pa. — Whitehall police are investigating a student's allegation that a teacher at J.E. Harrison Middle School punched him Wednesday, according to Channel 11's news partners at TribLIVE.

Police told TribLIVE that the student's grandmother filed a report with them and then took her grandson to Jefferson Hospital for an examination and treatment.

Kris Kolich told Channel 11 that her grandson, 13, was assaulted by his math teacher, and that she’s frustrated with the school’s response.

According to Kolich, her grandson asked to go to his locker to get a book. The teacher allegedly said no and, with a full fist, punched the child in the chest.

The student said he doubled over and fell to the ground.

“It was just out of the blue but I don’t understand it at all,” Kolich said.

The student, a 7th grader, had some bruising on his face but a hospital found no broken bones or concussion.

TribLIVE reported that police plan to go to the school Thursday morning to talk to school administrators, the accused teacher and any other school personnel or students who can provide any information about the allegations.

Baldwin-Whitehall School District Superintendent Randy Lutz issued the following statement Thursday:

"Our schools are governed by a strict policy governing the use of physical force with students, and we have no other information to share at this time other than to ensure that providing every student with a safe and caring environment in which to learn is our first priority and will be upheld without exception."
