PITTSBURGH — Young cancer patients painted a vehicle as part of an event held at UPMC Children’s Hospital on Wednesday.
The hospital received a $100,000 grant to support pediatric cancer research as part of Hyundai’s Hope on Wheels initiative. The grant directly supports the work of the Lemieux Institute for Pediatric Cancer Research at the hospital.
As part of the initiative, young cancer patients placed their handprints on a vehicle at UPMC Children’s, with each handprint representing a child’s experience with cancer treatment.
Among the young patients participating in the event was Liam Haney, a cancer patient who completed four rounds of chemotherapy.
“It was very rough and hard, but I fought through it. And I am now months in remission,” Haney said.
Over the years, Hyundai has provided approximately $5 million in total support for pediatric cancer initiatives at UPMC.
